Transcript
The
Reef
Road
It
was
near
dusk
one
day
in the
1840s
when
a
Comanche
raiding
party
hit
Corpus
Christi
. A
unit
of
Texas
Rangers
in
town
chased
the
Indiand
back
to a
spit
of
land
at the
end
of
North
Beach
. The
Rangers
decided
to
keep
them
pinned
in
against
the
water
and
attack
them at
sunrise
. But
next
morning
, to their
surprise
, the
Comanches
had
vanished
.
That's
how
Corpus
Christi
discovered
a
natural
reef
that
separated
Corpus
Christi
Bay
from
Nueces
Bay
. The
reef
led
across
the
bay
from the
northern
point
of
North
Beach
to what
is
now
called
Indian
Point
on the
other
side
.
Travelers
to
Corpus
Christi
began
to
routinely
use
the
Reef
Road
.
One
of the
first
acts
of the
Nueces
County
Commissioners
Court
, in
1847
, was to
order
the
placement
of
markers
on the
Reef
Road
so
that
wagons
wouldn't
stray
into
deeper
water
. Those
living
north
of the
bay
who
came
to
Corpus
Christi
to
shop
had to be
careful
and
leave
while
there was
still
light
enough
to
cross
the
reef
. Those
who
stayed
too
long
would
lie
down
in the
wagon
bed
and
look
for the
post
markers
in the
phosphorous
glow
kicked
up
by
horses
'
hooves
. The
markers
showing
the
twists
and
turns
of the
Reef
Road
were
taken
down
during
the
Civil
War
, to
confound
Union
invaders
, but the
markers
went
back
up
after
the
war
was
over
. The
Reef
Road
was
still
in
use
in the
20th
century
,
until
a
causeway
was
built
. From the
1840s
to
until
1914
,
Nueces
County
had the
only
road
officially
marked
and
maintained
at
taxpayer
expense
----
that was
under
three
feet
of
saltwater
.
