The Mystery Of Sally Skull One night in New York, Judge Crater stepped into a taxi and disappeared. Amelia Earhart ditched her plane in the Pacific and was never heard of again. To these mysteries you can add one from South Texas: What happened to Sally Skull? Her name was Sarah Newman, but she married a man named Skull. They separated, but she liked the name and kept it for the rest of her life. She moved to Banquete in 1852. She was in Corpus Christi that year. Rip Ford was riding out of town when he heard a gunshot and, turning in his saddle, saw a man fall and saw Sally Skull; holstering her pistol. Few men would risk provoking her. She was a crack shot and a fast draw. Sally once heard that a man said something uncomplimentary about her. When she saw him, she pulled a pistol and said"Been talking about me, huh? Well, dance you son of a bitch!" and shot at his feet while he did a pale-faced two-step. She bought horses in Mexico and sold them in East Texas. It was said the brands might not stand close inspection. She hauled cotton to Matamoros during the Civil War. She collected and discarded husbands, some of whom disappeared. Sally was 43 when she married her fifth husband, a man named Harsdorf, but called "Horse Trough." One day after the end of the Civil War, she vanished into the South Texas brush country. It was said that "Horse Trough" blew the top of her head off with a shotgun and stole the gold she carried in her saddlebags. Whatever happened to Sally Skull, she went to that nether world of famous people who vanished into the pages of history. Murphy Givens: KEDT Radio Scripts |
