Hunting POWs In Corpus Christi Probably the biggest manhunt in Corpus Christi history occurred in the second week of February, 1944. Two German POWs escaped from a prison camp near Mexia, 360 miles north. They fled to Corpus Christi with the idea of getting a boat and making it to Mexico. When it was reported that two German prisoners had escaped and were in the Corpus Christi area, people began to see Nazis everywhere. Police received hundreds of calls. A merchant seaman with an accent was hauled to jail. Two Russian students, here to study refinery operations, were heard talking in Russian in a café. They were arrested. A young boy told police he had seen the escaped POWs hiding in the bushes near his school. It turned out to be three men in a crap game. Almost anyone with a speech impediment, or even a Yankee accent, was suspect.. The two Germans were here. They were staying at a tourist court on North Beach. When a nearby resident reported them, and the deputies showed up to make the arrest, the prisoners thought they were there to collect a bill. They were arrested and taken to the Nueces County Jail. The two ---- both Luftwaffe pilots ---- were identified as Lieutenant Eugene Kurz, 28, and Heinz Grimm, 21. They refused to talk to authorities and demanded that they be addressed as, "sir." They were sent back to Mexia to sit out the rest of the war. Some years later, one of the two men, Grimm, wrote the Caller -Times and asked for newspaper clips about their capture. They sure had the people of Corpus Christi looking under their beds for a few days in February of 1944. Murphy Givens: KEDT Radio Scripts |
