Remedies
On The
Frontier
Doctors
and
hospitals
were
few
and
far
between
in
frontier
days
in
Texas
,
so
people
were
forced
by
necessity
to
treat
themselves
.
Some
of their
treatments
sound
sensible
,
while
others
sound
totally
ineffective.
.
Chamomile
tea
was
said
to
help
insomnia
. That
sounds
reasonable
. A
paste
made
of
parched
flour
and
milk
was
used
to
treat
cholera
. That
one
surely
didn't
work
. A
poultice
of
stewed
tomatoes
applied
to the
feet
,
it
was
said
, would
reduce
fever
.
Sassafras
tea
would also
reduce
a
high
fever
.
Drinking
rainwater
that had been
allowed
to
steep
in a
bucket
filled
with
rusty
nails
would
restore
iron
to the
blood
.
Pine
needles
boiled
in
honey-flavored
water
made
a
spring
tonic
for
kids
.
Salt
mixed
with
butter
would
take
away
the
itch
of
chigger
bites
.
Gunpowder
would
dry
up
blisters
.
Bruised
geranium
leaves
were
put
on
cuts
to
help
the
skin
heal
.
Flesh
wounds
were
treated
with the
smoke
from a
pan
of
burning
coals
,
sprinkled
with
brown
sugar
.
Rattlesnake
oil
was
used
to
treat
rheumatism
and
toothaches
.
(Rattlesnake
oil
was also
prized
by
gunfighters
,
who
used
it
to
grease
their
holsters.)
Vaqueros
used
a
poultice
made
of
prickly
pear
leaves
,
mixed
with
goat
lard
, for
rattlesnake
bites
. But they
sucked
the
venom
out
first
.
J
.
Frank
Dobie
once
wrote
that the
best
poultice
for
spider
bites
was
made
from
crushed
tumblebugs
. "
It
will
draw
the
bucket
out
of the
well
" he
wrote
. "
Just
mash
them
up
and
put
them on
raw.
"
Did
any of these
remedies
work
?
I
don't
know
, but
I
wouldn't
try
to
find
out
by
trying
them if
I
were
you
.
I'd
see
a
doctor
first
.
There's
no
shortage
of them
today
.
