Transcript
Forty
Niners
Came
Through
Corpus
Christi
The
news
spread
like
a
raging
wildfire
.
Gold
had been
found
near
Sacramento
. The
country
went
a
little
crazy
in
1848
.
Fields
were
left
half-planted
and
houses
half-built
as
men
took
off
for the
California
gold
fields
to
strike
it
rich
. The
founder
of
Corpus
Christi
,
Henry
Kinney
,
saw
an
opportunity
.
Corpus
Christi
had
fallen
on
hard
times
since
Zachary
Taylor
'
s
army
had
left
in
1846
. The
town
had
dwindled
to
300
people
.
Kinney
began
to
advertise
in
Eastern
papers
that the
best
route
to
California
was by
packet
boat
to
Corpus
Christi
,
overland
to
El
Paso
, and
across
northern
Mexico
to
California
. The
town
soon
filled
with
miners
.
Boats
arrived
daily
. The
miners
bought
wagons
,
horses
,
mules
and
formed
companies
for the
trip
west
.
One
group
called
itself
Kinney's
Rangers
. There was the
Carson
Association
, the
Essex
Mining
Co
. , and
hundreds
of
others
. The
town
was
thriving
.
Coopers
,
blacksmiths
,
gunsmiths
set
up
shop
. The
Corpus
Christi
Star
was
filled
with
news
of the
great
riches
being
panned
and
dug
up
in
California
. The
editor
of the
Star
,
John
Peoples
,
took
off
his
printer's
apron
and
left
for
California
.
(He
drowned
on the
way
trying
to
cross
the
Gulf
of
California.)
The
word
spread
that the
route
across
the
Chihuahua
and
Sonora
deserts
was a
tough
trip
.
It
was
easier
to
take
a
boat
to
Panama
and
walk
across
the
isthmus
and
take
another
boat
to
California
. For
Corpus
Christi
, the
gold
rush
was
over
by the
end
of
1849
. The
gold
fever
that
gripped
the
country
would
last
years
longer
and the
lure
of the
golden
state
would
never
be
over
.
